Growing up, I spent a lot of time reading about science without having any real idea what a scientist actually did to understand something new. In college I found that what scientists do is no different than what anyone does to figure something out; they just use different tools and have special knowledge specific to their particular problems. Developmental psychology seems to get at the fundamental processes that support all of thinking.
Besides science, I like cooking and reading and music, particularly jazz (so it's nice to be in the Boston area). I grew up in San Francisco and Minneapolis and studied math at the University of Minnesota before coming to MIT.
